Shocks in the European energy market and the drop in wholesale electricity prices are taking a heavy toll on renewable energy projects across the continent. The British energy company Welink Energy has officially entered insolvency proceedings following a severe cash flow crisis and operational difficulties at its flagship project — the solar field in Alcoutim, Portugal, which has been operating at a capacity of 220 megawatts since 2021.

The financial collapse comes against the backdrop of lower-than-planned electricity output and a sharp decline in energy prices in the Iberian market, which almost completely eroded the project's revenues. Added to the economic difficulties were severe operational failures, including complex technical malfunctions and several fire incidents that damaged production continuity.

Alongside the erosion of revenues, the company is entangled in a complex legal dispute with the Chinese company CTIEC, which served as the construction contractor for the site and is now claiming 143 million euros in arbitration proceedings. Furthermore, the company has left behind a huge financial exposure to lending banks, including Investec and Kommunalcredit Austria, with debts of approximately 64 million euros.

Following the entry into insolvency proceedings, Welink's managers were stripped of their powers and management was transferred to the external company Exus, which operates in cooperation with the company Enertis. The goal now is to assess the investments required to rehabilitate the facility, increase its output, and prepare the asset for sale to new investors, while plans to expand the project and make it hybrid using wind energy are currently delayed by the authorities.
