Family of girl who died by suicide sues Ministry of Education for 16 million shekels
The parents of Adva Weinblum Ovadia filed a lawsuit against the Ministry of Education, the Acre Municipality, the ORT network, the school, and Amidar. They claim a series of failures led to the tragedy.
About a year and a half after the death of 13-year-old Adva Weinblum Ovadia from Acre, her parents filed a lawsuit in the Tel Aviv District Court for approximately 16 million shekels against the Ministry of Education, the Acre Municipality, the school she attended, the ORT network, and the Amidar company. According to the family, the defendants bear responsibility for the events that led to her death.
According to the statement of claim, filed through attorney Gil Ichbom, the defendants were negligent in fulfilling their duties and did not prevent the ongoing abuse of the girl. It is further alleged that for years Adva, who was on the autism spectrum, suffered from bullying and ostracism by students, while the family claims the education system did not act sufficiently to address the phenomenon and protect her.
The lawsuit further claims that Adva experienced severe mental distress over the years, and that due to her condition, she was not fully aware of the consequences of her actions. In addition to the lawsuit against the educational bodies, the Amidar company was also sued. According to the mother, the company did not address her request to install bars in the family's apartment on the sixth floor, from which Adva fell.
The lawsuit states that this concerns the "responsibility of the defendants, jointly and severally, for the heavy tragedy that occurred as a direct result of their negligence and omissions," and that the family seeks to hold them liable for the damage caused.
