Kendrick Perkins: Stephen Curry Must Plan His Exit Strategy from Golden State
Kendrick Perkins criticized the Warriors' management following a disappointing offseason, stating that the 38-year-old superstar cannot afford to waste his remaining years: "I want him to retire there, but I also want him to compete for a championship."
Kendrick Perkins believes it is time for Stephen Curry to start thinking seriously about his future outside of Golden State. The ESPN commentator and former player harshly criticized the Warriors following their quiet offseason, claiming that the current roster is not capable of contending for a championship.
"Steph Curry must start planning his exit strategy from Golden State," Perkins said on the show "NBA Today." "For the last three years, the Warriors have been in the play-in tournament, and this year, with how the West looks, they will be a play-in team again."
Perkins' criticism was directed primarily at the club's management, which did not make any significant signings via trade or the free agent market during the summer, and even failed to acquire LeBron James.
"If you are Steph Curry, who is approaching age 39, and you look at this roster, when you have four championships and you know what a championship team looks like, you cannot waste more time hoping that Mike Dunleavy will make the right moves to build a team that can contend for the title, especially in such a strong West," he added.
Despite his words, Perkins clarified that for him, the ideal scenario is for Curry to finish his career with the Warriors. "I want Steph Curry to retire as a Golden State player. But I also want to see him play meaningful basketball. I want to see him play when the games really matter, and with this roster, that is simply not going to happen anytime soon."
Curry, who began his 18th NBA season this summer, won four championships with Golden State and became one of the greatest icons in the club's history. At this stage, there is no indication that he is considering leaving, but if the Warriors continue to drift away from the championship race in the upcoming season as well, the discussion surrounding his future is expected only to intensify.
