Two Young Women Die in Flash Flood Near Sao Paulo in Brazil
Two young women lost their lives in a flash flood in Jundiai, near Sao Paulo, after being swept away while returning from a party. Heavy rainfall caused severe flooding, disrupting local transport.
Two young women died early Sunday morning in a flash flood in Jundiai, located about 60 kilometers northwest of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The victims, 16-year-old Laura Rayane Ferreira da Silva and 19-year-old Rayni Rodrigues da Silva Barbosa, were returning from a party when they were caught in a powerful rush of floodwaters.
Footage from the scene shows the two standing in rapidly moving water before one of them loses her footing. Her friend grabs her arm with both hands, attempting to pull her back to safety, but the fallen young woman struggles to stand. As the rescue attempt unfolds, the second young woman steps further into the current to help, only to be knocked down herself. Both were swept away together and disappeared from view as bystanders moved toward the area.
Rayni was pulled from the water near a club entrance and rushed to Sao Paulo de Paulo Hospital, where she died hours later. Laura was swept downstream for nearly 1.9 kilometers, and firefighters discovered her body among rocks the following morning.
Local authorities reported that 79 millimeters of rain fell in the area during the incident. The severe flooding damaged a bridge, caused a riverbank collapse, and forced the suspension of train traffic between Jundiai and Sao Paulo for over four hours. Organizers of the university party expressed profound sorrow, stating they are in contact with the grieving families to provide support.
