Jorge Messi, the father of Lionel Messi, passed away this morning (Saturday) at a clinic in Rosario, Argentina. The businessman and agent for the Argentina national team captain was 68 years old and had been battling a prolonged illness.

Jorge, husband of Celia Cuccittini and father to Lionel, Rodrigo, Matias, and Maria Sol, was the cornerstone of his son's tremendous football career. He served as a guide and mentor, managing all responsibilities off the pitch. He was the one who fought for Leo to receive essential medical treatment as a young player at Newell's Old Boys, and he was the one who stayed by his side in Barcelona when they embarked on their European adventure, while his mother managed the family's affairs back in Rosario.

His presence was constant, yet he always preferred to protect his son quietly from the sidelines. He gave few interviews and maintained a low profile, with his social media presence mostly limited to celebrating Lionel’s achievements alongside family photos.

Recently, the 39-year-old star could not hide his tears after scoring in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup. After completing a hat-trick, Lionel Messi addressed his reaction:

"It stems from a matter that has nothing to do with football at all. I have had a few difficult and complex days. I am grateful to the entire delegation, which, as always, was by my side."

On that same day, rumors regarding his father's death began to circulate, including reports on television. The family issued an official statement, requesting: "Respect us, this is insensitive."
