A delegation of Jewish educators from the United States and Israel scheduled a professional trip to Italy to study early childhood education methods faced unexpected political demands. Upon arriving in Reggio Emilia, the American participants were asked to sign a declaration condemning the war in Gaza and distancing themselves from Israeli military policies. Consequently, the Paradigm Project, which organized the American delegation, postponed the trip, while 25 Israeli educators decided to proceed with the visit as planned.

Protests and Political Pressure in Italy

The controversy began before the declaration was sent, driven by local opposition from parents and the Italian General Confederation of Labour, who objected to the visit over ties to institutions supporting the IDF. Demonstrators gathered outside the educational center holding banners demanding the removal of Zionism from schools. Dr. Pesa Kaltnic, director of the Manhattan Day School, reported that participants' social media accounts were scrutinized for displays of Israeli flags and visits to the country. Meanwhile, Reggio Children president Madalena Tedeschi defended the initiative, noting that a values charter was introduced to ensure peaceful engagement.

Professional Value of the Reggio Emilia Approach

The Reggio Emilia method, developed after World War II, views children as active partners in learning through inquiry and creativity. Educators from the US and Israel sought to adopt these progressive techniques for Jewish kindergartens. Despite the cancellation of the American delegation, the Israeli educators entered the facilities, though their reasons for attending without signing the declaration remain undisclosed.
