A group of approximately 100 Jewish educators from the United States and Israel has canceled their participation in a professional training seminar in Italy. The decision came after the host organization demanded that attendees sign a political statement condemning Israeli policies as a prerequisite for attendance.

The seminar, scheduled to take place later this month in the northern Italian city of Reggio Emilia, was designed to focus on the renowned pedagogical approach developed in the region, which has been widely adopted in Jewish preschools and schools worldwide.

Political Demands and Protests

The requirement for a political declaration arose following protests led by parents affiliated with the host organization, who expressed strong opposition to the arrival of Jewish educators under the premise that they support Israel and the IDF. The required pledge included demands to protect the human rights of individuals in the territories as well as globally.

Simultaneously, organizers worked on an additional statement calling for the removal of any militarized symbols from schools. These measures were viewed by delegation members as direct political targeting and led to a unanimous decision to cancel the trip.

Reactions from Educators

Participants reported that targeting began even before the official ultimatum was issued. "Our identities were published, and our personal and institutional profiles were scrutinized on social media and framed as supporters of Israel and the IDF," stated Pasha Kaltnick, director of the Manhattan Day School.

Melissa Davis of the Milton Gottesman Jewish Day School in Washington emphasized the broader impact of the incident:

Global antisemitism is what drove this demand. This is a severe long-term loss for our community: our teachers, and subsequently their students, will miss the opportunity to enrich themselves through this educational experience.

Political Condemnation in Italy

The affair has sparked significant political controversy in Italy. Italian senator and politician Ivan Scalfarotto sharply criticized the seminar organizers, stating that asking Jews, simply for being Jewish, to disavow the policies of the Israeli government constitutes overt antisemitism.
