Jannik Sinner announced: 'I will not participate in the US Open'
The Italian, who has not played since his victory at Wimbledon, announced that a right knee injury will prevent him from participating in the last Grand Slam of the season: 'I am very sad and disappointed, New York holds a special place in my heart.'
Jannik Sinner, ranked number 1 in the world, announced today, Friday, that he will not be able to participate in the US Open, following a right knee injury he has been suffering from since the Wimbledon tournament. Sinner, who won Wimbledon this year for the second consecutive time after defeating Alexander Zverev in the final, has not played since. Due to the injury, he was forced to miss the Masters 1000 tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati, and will now also miss the prestigious tournament in New York.
'Although I worked hard with my team and the medical staff, we had to make the difficult decision that I will not be able to compete this year at the US Open,' Sinner wrote on social media.
For Sinner, this is a particularly significant absence. The 25-year-old Italian has participated in every Grand Slam tournament since his debut at the US Open in 2019, and this will be the first time he misses one of the four major tournaments. Sinner also won the US Open in 2024, and last year he reached the final, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz.
'I am of course very sad and disappointed, because New York has a special place in my heart. I was really looking forward to returning and playing in the electric atmosphere in front of the great fans there,' he wrote.
The announcement comes just after encouraging news from his great rival, Alcaraz. The Spaniard announced just yesterday that he is expected to return to the courts at the US Open, after a four-month absence following a wrist injury.
