Israir is currently negotiating the acquisition of its competitor Arkia amid severe financial difficulties faced by the rival airline, according to market sources. Arkia is projected to finish the year with a net loss of $50 million to $60 million, having already accumulated an estimated loss of $30 million in the first three quarters.

According to the company's official website, Arkia's fleet consists of three owned aircraft and seven wet-leased planes. The carrier operates flights to numerous international destinations across North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, including New York, Bangkok, London, Paris, and Dubai, alongside domestic and regional routes.

Strategic Benefits for Israir

Should the acquisition proceed, Israir stands to gain valuable takeoff and landing slots at Ben Gurion International Airport, where slot availability remains severely constrained. The deal would also eliminate a major market competitor while creating operational synergies and integrating experienced personnel.

Since the beginning of the year, Arkia ranks as the third-largest carrier at Ben Gurion Airport, handling 1.44 million passengers, which accounts for roughly 10% of total passenger traffic. Israir holds the second position with 1.56 million passengers and an 11.7% market share as of September.

Regulatory and Labor Challenges

Any potential transaction will require clearance from the Israel Competition Authority, which must weigh the reduction of market competition against the risk of Arkia's collapse. Meanwhile, internal tensions persist between management and employees holding a stake in the company, following disputes over equity dilution and financial losses.
