Gold and silver prices surged by 2% and 4% respectively amid a weakening US dollar, driven by US midterm election results pointing to Democratic control of Congress. Investors rushed to safe-haven assets, steering away from riskier holdings.

Gold climbed 2% to $4,005 per ounce, while silver jumped 4% to trade around $51.68 per ounce. Other precious metals also recorded gains, including a 3.3% surge in platinum. Simultaneously, Wall Street stock futures traded lower before showing signs of recovery. The US dollar index fell by about 0.3%, and the dollar also weakened against the Israeli shekel, bucking recent trends.

Market Reaction to Uncertainty

Market responses reflect investor anxiety over potential political instability in Washington. US analysts indicate that Democratic control of Congress could lead to institutional friction, putting downward pressure on the dollar and bond yields, which in turn supports gold prices.

Trend Reversal or Temporary Spike?

This spike follows a challenging year for precious metals investors. Throughout 2026, gold fell by over 7% and silver plummeted by roughly 28%, contrasting sharply with record highs in 2025. These declines stemmed from the Federal Reserve's aggressive interest rate hikes to combat inflation.

Despite recent gains, analysts warn the recovery may remain fragile. Daniela Hathorn, an analyst at Capital.com, noted that geopolitical uncertainty does not automatically translate into demand when investors remain concerned about restrictive monetary policy.
