A surge in seasonal influenza cases is hitting households across Israel, with health experts warning of rapid transmission among family members. Dr. Miki Stein, a pediatrician at Clalit Health Services in the Haifa and Western Galilee district, notes that the virus often spreads swiftly through homes, causing high fevers, severe fatigue, and persistent coughs within days.

According to medical specialists, influenza can be transmitted even before symptoms become apparent. A child may feel well, attend school, and interact with family members while already contagious. The virus spreads primarily through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing, as well as via contaminated hands and surfaces, creating a rapid chain of infection.

Complications and Prevention

While influenza typically resolves within a week with rest and hydration, it can lead to severe complications such as ear infections, pneumonia, sinusitis, and exacerbations of chronic conditions like asthma and diabetes. Doctors emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective tool to mitigate the spread and severity of the illness.

Medical authorities recommend annual vaccination for all individuals starting from six months of age. Preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, proper respiratory hygiene, and keeping sick children at home until they are fever-free for at least 24 hours, are crucial in breaking the cycle of household transmission.
