Israel and Morocco Agree to Upgrade Diplomatic Ties to Full Embassies

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar flew to New York for a secret trip to hold a trilateral meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz on Wednesday.

Israel and Morocco already maintain official diplomatic relations, and it is now reported that the ties will see an upgrade. Sa'ar is also expected to hold a one-on-one meeting with Foreign Minister Bourita. His office stated that during the trilateral summit, the three nations recommitted to a series of steps to upgrade Israel-Morocco relations, including upgrading diplomatic ties, raising the level of missions in both countries to full embassies, and appointing ambassadors.

"Israel and Morocco have agreed to finalize, by the end of 2026, agreements on the protection of investments and the prevention of double taxation, which will facilitate mutual investments and help promote economic and business ties between the peoples and countries," the statement read. Additionally, it was agreed to expand direct flights between Israel and the two countries to include flights by Moroccan airlines, which Sa'ar noted will begin in the coming weeks.

"It was further agreed at the summit to hold high-level mutual visits by both countries in the coming months," the announcement noted. Wednesday's summit took place the day after an event hosted by Ambassador Waltz at his residence marking six years since the signing of the Abraham Accords. The event was attended by representatives of the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Israel, and the United States.

"The friendship between the Moroccan people and the Jewish people has deep roots and a glorious history," Sa'ar stated. "The declaration we signed today details practical ways to upgrade ties between Israel and Morocco for the benefit of both peoples, and we will work diligently to implement it."
