The Israeli Embassy in Thailand has issued a strong warning against the spread of fake news and fabricated stories circulating on social media regarding Israeli tourists in the country. Deputy Chief of Mission Rami Teplitsky addressed the public in an official video published on October 16, refuting viral claims concerning alleged theft incidents and mass displays of Israeli flags in popular tourist areas.

Debunking Viral Misinformation

Among the false reports addressed was an incident in Patong, Phuket, where two tourists were accused of shoplifting from a convenience store without paying. While Teplitsky confirmed that the minor offense did indeed take place, he clarified that the suspects were not Israeli nationals. Thai police and subsequent media reports officially verified that the individuals held different citizenships.

Another fabricated story involved the island of Koh Phangan, where social media posts claimed that massive Israeli flags were being hoisted across the region. Local authorities investigated the claims and confirmed that the events never occurred, and the widely shared images were merely artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes. Additional false narratives regarding mass migration and inappropriate behavior have also surfaced online recently.

Call for Critical Thinking

Fake news not only spreads misinformation. It can create fear, deepen misunderstandings, and unfairly harm entire people and communities, the embassy stated in an official announcement.

Teplitsky urged social media users to exercise caution, verify sources, and apply critical thinking before believing or sharing sensational claims online. The embassy emphasized that while genuine concerns and open discussions are always welcome, they must remain grounded in verified facts rather than malicious fabrications.
