Israel and Cyprus Sign Major Defense Deal for New Naval Patrol Vessel
Israel and Cyprus signed a defense agreement on Monday for the supply of a new offshore patrol vessel and system upgrades, strengthening bilateral ties and naval capabilities.

Israel and Cyprus signed a major defense agreement on Monday, under which Israel will supply Nicosia with a new offshore patrol vessel (OPV). The deal was formalized at a ceremony in Cyprus, led by the International Defense Cooperation Directorate (SIBAT) of Israel's Ministry of Defense and its Cypriot counterpart.
The agreement was signed by Israeli Ministry of Defense Director-General Amir Baram and acting Permanent Secretary of the Cypriot Ministry of Defense Stelios Kontouris. Under the terms of the accord, Israel will provide a new OPV manufactured by Israel Shipyards, equipped with advanced maritime systems developed by Rafael.
In addition to the new vessel, existing maritime systems on Cyprus's current OPV—also built by Israel Shipyards and acquired in 2016—will undergo comprehensive upgrades. The OPV models are based on the Sa'ar 4.5 design, measuring 62 meters in length with a displacement of 500 tons and a maximum speed of approximately 30 knots.
This marks Cyprus's second order for the Israeli-built patrol ships, following an initial plan to procure three vessels. The transaction reinforces operational capabilities for the Cypriot navy while further strengthening strategic defense ties between Jerusalem and Nicosia.
