The iPhone 18 Pro series has officially landed in Israel as part of the global launch wave. Rather than reinventing the wheel, Apple has refined last year's formula, particularly in terms of design, while introducing notable hardware and software upgrades. These include a mechanical aperture enabling manual camera control, the powerful A20 Pro chip paired with an advanced cooling system, and a reduced Dynamic Island that now supports up to three simultaneous live activities.
The Main Innovation: Camera and Mechanical Aperture
The most significant hardware breakthrough in the iPhone 18 Pro Max lies within its camera system. The rear setup features three 48-megapixel sensors: a main wide lens, an ultra-wide lens, and a telephoto lens offering 4x optical zoom. On the front, an 18-megapixel selfie camera automatically widens the frame or captures horizontal photos even when the device is held vertically.
For the first time, the Pro models replace a fixed aperture with a variable mechanical aperture in the primary lens. Composed of six individual blades, the mechanism widens to capture more light or closes down as needed, giving users absolute manual control over the light entering the sensor. The camera delivers exceptionally sharp and bright images, even in low-light and nighttime conditions.
A standout feature is focus tracking. By double-tapping an object, the camera locks onto it, displaying an active indicator and a yellow tracking frame at the top of the screen. Even if the subject temporarily leaves the frame, focus is immediately re-established upon its return across all rear lenses.
Performance and Display: The A20 Pro Chip
Under the hood, the A20 Pro chip delivers a substantial performance boost. Apple claims the new processor is up to 50% faster than its predecessor, a difference that is immediately tangible in daily operations and heavy multitasking. The chip is supported by a vapor chamber cooling system designed to prevent thermal throttling during intensive tasks such as gaming or high-resolution video recording. However, during the initial data transfer and setup from an older iPhone, the device experienced noticeable warming, though no abnormal heating occurred afterward.
The display is built around a 6.9-inch LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED panel with a dynamic 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10, and Dolby Vision support. Reaching a peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits, the screen remains razor-sharp and legible even under direct sunlight.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers an impressive technological leap, yet users holding an iPhone 16 Pro or 17 Pro may find the upgrade cycle unnecessary unless specific camera or performance features are required.
Design, Battery Life, and Pricing
From a design standpoint, the device retains Apple's familiar aesthetic. The Pro Max model is slightly heavier—weighing 16 grams more than its predecessor due to the enlarged battery, aluminum chassis, and cooling infrastructure. The ceramic shield back now features a uniform color finish, highlighted by a bold new burgundy option.
Battery life easily spans a full day of intensive use. Fast-charging capabilities allow the device to reach nearly 50% capacity in just 15 minutes, achieving a full 100% charge in 45 minutes. Pricing in the local market starts at approximately 5,700 to 5,800 shekels for base configurations, scaling up to around 11,000 shekels for maximum storage capacities, reflecting a $100 price increase in the US market.
