We eat, drink, and use these products almost every day, without stopping to think about what is really hiding inside them. Behind the familiar taste, color, texture, and smell, sometimes hide ingredients that come from sources we would never have thought of: from trees and insects to animals and materials also used in industry. Here are 10 of the most surprising and bizarre ingredients that can be found in everyday products.

  1. Sawdust and wood. Have you ever wondered how the shredded cheese in the bag doesn't stick together into one lump? One of the reasons is cellulose, a fiber derived from plants and sometimes also from wood. It is used in the food industry to prevent sticking and clumping. It can also be found in products like sauces, cake mixes, and breakfast cereals.

  2. Human hair and duck feathers. L-Cysteine is an amino acid used in the baking industry to improve dough. In the past, it was also produced from sources like human hair, feathers, horns, and animal bristles. Today, it can also be produced through other industrial processes.

  3. Whale "vomit" - Ambergris. Ambergris is a substance formed in the digestive system of sperm whales and expelled from their bodies. In the perfume world, it was used as a substance that helps the scent last longer. Today, synthetic substitutes are mainly used, but natural ambergris is still considered rare and expensive.

  4. "Sand" in food - Silicon Dioxide. Silicon Dioxide is a substance found in nature and is a major component of sand. In the food industry, it is used in small amounts to prevent powders and dry products from becoming lumpy.

  5. Boiled insects - Carmine. The bright red color found in some sweets, drinks, and cosmetic products sometimes comes from carmine. This is a dye produced from small insects called cochineal.

  6. Insect secretions on candies - Shellac. Shellac is mainly known as a shiny coating for wood, but it is also used to give shine to candies, gummy candies, coffee beans, and certain fruits. The substance is produced from the secretions of the Lac insect.

  7. Beaver secretions - Castoreum. Castoreum is a substance produced from sacs located in the base of the tail area of beavers. In the past, it was mainly used in perfumes, and in some cases, as a flavoring agent.

  8. Coolant - Propylene Glycol. Propylene Glycol is used in a variety of fields, including certain coolants. It is also found in some food products, thanks to its ability to retain moisture. It can be found, for example, in cake mixes, ice creams, and sauces.

  9. Animal skins and bones - Gelatin. Gelatin, found in gummy candies, marshmallows, and various desserts, is produced from collagen. Collagen is mainly extracted from the skins, bones, and cartilage of animals, such as pigs and cattle.

  10. The silicone of "Silly Putty" in fried foods. PDMS is a type of silicone that is also used in materials like "Silly Putty". Thanks to its ability to prevent foaming, it is also used in the food industry, including in commercial frying oil. It helps reduce foaming and splattering during frying.

So before you start looking suspiciously at every candy, slice of bread, or fried dish, don't worry. Just because a certain substance sounds strange or even disgusting, doesn't mean it's dangerous. These substances are used in permitted amounts and in forms approved for use in food, and you can continue eating, only now you know a little more about what might be hiding behind the ingredient list.
