The Israeli Navy's sixth submarine, the INS Drakon, has officially arrived at the Haifa naval base after a 24-day voyage from Kiel, Germany. The advanced vessel, measuring approximately 70 meters in length and weighing 3,000 tons, represents a significant technological leap for the IDF, integrating cutting-edge intelligence and weapon systems.
Journey and Operational Readiness
The submarine's journey from Germany involved complex testing phases, despite logistical hurdles when certain European nations denied docking requests for deep-sea trials. Commander of the 7th Submarine Flotilla, Colonel Y., and INS Drakon Commander Lieutenant Colonel A. oversaw the rigorous technical evaluations. The vessel will become fully operational in approximately two months following the installation of specialized Israeli systems.
Strategic Importance
During a special visit aboard the vessel, Brigadier General Guy Levy, Chief of Staff of the Navy, emphasized the strategic necessity of expanding the submarine fleet amid growing regional threats.
"This submarine brings new and lethal combat capabilities, longer endurance, and the ability to carry more weaponry with complete secrecy in distant areas where Israel has never been before," stated Brig. Gen. Levy.
The INS Drakon, whose name pays homage to the legacy of the former INS Dakar, is valued at roughly half a billion euros. Its enhanced stealth, intelligence-gathering capabilities, and operational range are designed to address evolving maritime challenges in the Middle East.
