Massive fire in Nevada, USA: 90,000 citizens evacuated from their homes
13,000 homes have burned in a wildfire that spiraled out of control. The Governor of Nevada declared a state of emergency and called for the intervention of the National Guard. Firefighters report significant challenges in protecting homes and residents.
Tens of thousands have been evacuated from their homes following a wildfire in the United States, as reported today, Monday, by several American media outlets. The fire broke out last Saturday in Washoe County, Nevada, and according to reports, was human-caused. Currently, at least 90,000 people are forced to evacuate their homes and flee the flames.
The fire started in the Sierra mountain region and has so far consumed about 60,000 dunams. Yesterday, it spread to the outskirts of Reno, the state's fourth-largest city. The Governor of Nevada, Joe Lombardo, declared a state of emergency in Washoe County and requested the participation of the National Guard in firefighting efforts.
"The situation is deteriorating rapidly—I call on citizens in danger zones to remain vigilant," the Governor stated.
As of now, firefighters have not managed to gain control over any part of the fire. Residents of nearby towns who have not yet been evacuated have been asked to prepare for departure. Richard Edwards, a county fire station chief, described the difficult conditions:
"The fire is dynamic and changing quickly due to strong winds. We are struggling to save all the homes in its path and protect everyone."
At least 13,000 homes have burned since the fire broke out on Saturday, and six people have been injured. Darin Balaam, the Sheriff of Washoe County, urged all residents to evacuate, even if they have not yet received an official order:
"If you can leave now, I ask that you do so."
This fire comes just a few weeks after three other fires spread across Nevada under similar conditions. According to data published by the US National Interagency Fire Center, fires in the United States have consumed more than 30 million dunams this year, making the current fire season the largest in a decade.
Just last month, 800 wildfires burning across Canada caused significant concern in the United States. Climate researchers continue to warn that global warming is exacerbating the wildfire phenomenon.
