Stole an ambulance in Kiryat Yam and claimed: "It was bothering the road"
48-year-old Michael Levin took advantage of the moment the paramedic stepped out to drop off a patient, entered the ambulance, and fled with it to the beach. The police claim he also stole money and property from inside, and his detention was extended by 3 days.
An ambulance parked with its engine running and air conditioning on in Kiryat Yam last Wednesday was stolen in broad daylight while the driver stepped out to drop off a patient at her home.
Police located the vehicle abandoned shortly thereafter near the city's seashore. The suspect, 48-year-old Michael Levin from Kiryat Yam, was identified by intelligence officers from the Zevulun station who reviewed security footage, but he was not located until Thursday evening.
The suspect was arrested, spent the night in custody, and was brought to the Magistrate's Court in Haifa on Friday. Police allege that he stole the vehicle, drove it without a license while intoxicated, and stole money and property from inside.
During the hearing, the police representative stated that Levin admitted to driving the ambulance but offered an unusual excuse:
"The ambulance was bothering me and other road users, so I decided to move it."
The cash and property stolen from the ambulance have not yet been recovered, and Levin denies any involvement in the theft.
Attorney Naji Amer, representing him on behalf of the Public Defender's Office, requested his release. However, Judge Nir Zeituni determined that there is reasonable suspicion of the offenses and partially accepted the request of the Zevulun station investigators, ordering his detention to be extended by three days. He will be brought before a judge again on Sunday unless released sooner.
