Ha-Patria pub from Kibbutz Dan in the Hula Valley has filed a class-action lawsuit request with the Central District Court against IKEA. The lawsuit claims that the actual volume of the company's shot glasses is larger than indicated on product packaging, causing businesses serving chasers to dispense larger portions and consequently lose money.

The application was filed by Ha-Patria pub against Livne Tsafoni, the importer and marketer of IKEA in Israel, and IKEA of Sweden AB. The legal action revolves around allegations of misrepresentation presented by IKEA to its customers, including food and beverage business owners, regarding the capacity of shot glasses used for serving measured portions of alcoholic beverages.

Discrepancy in Volume and Financial Impact

According to the court filing, while the capacity of the shot glasses is actually 30 milliliters, they were marketed as containing only 25 milliliters. The pub claims that this figure is displayed in IKEA branches in Israel, on the company's Hebrew website, and even on customer invoices.

As a result of this discrepancy, the pub and other businesses that purchased the glasses allegedly supplied customers with larger quantities of alcohol than those upon which the drink prices were calculated, leading to financial damage. The filing states that business owners relied on the assumption that the glasses had a maximum capacity of 25 milliliters.

"The pub and other class members supplied their customers with a beverage quantity that was 20% greater than the amount upon which the price per shot glass was set," the lawsuit claims.

Details of the Lawsuit and Damages

Furthermore, the lawsuit alleges that IKEA did not qualify the data or indicate that the actual capacity of the glasses might be larger. The products at the center of the request are FIGURERA shot glasses (2.5 cl snaps glass).

The pub is represented by attorneys Amit Manor and Tzachi Shpitzan of Manor-Shpitzan Law Firm. They are asking the court to approve the claim as a class action on behalf of anyone who purchased the specified IKEA shot glasses in Israel over the past seven years, demanding financial compensation and an injunction prohibiting the continued display of the allegedly misleading data.

According to the request, the estimated damages are valued at over 2.5 million shekels. Between 2021 and 2026, Ha-Patria purchased 1,728 shot glasses from IKEA branches. The suspicion arose following a customer remark, prompting the owner to conduct tests that revealed the 30 ml capacity. In response, IKEA Israel stated that the lawsuit has not yet been received, and upon receipt, the company will review the claims and respond accordingly.
