A staple spice found in almost every kitchen is at the center of a new recall warning as Tevel Spices and Food Ltd. announced a recall of ground black pepper under the "Ta'amiti Gal" brand. The action follows tests by the Food Service at the Ministry of Health that detected aflatoxin levels exceeding the permitted limit, according to the company. In coordination with the Northern District Food Service, the firm has begun collecting packages from distribution channels, and consumers are urged to check their pantries and avoid consumption.

The recall applies to ground black pepper produced by Tevel Spices and Food Ltd. under the "Ta'amiti Gal" brand across four specific packaging types:

The announcement covers all "best before" dates up to and including 02/2028. Consumers possessing any of these packages are instructed not to use the product.
What Are Aflatoxins?
Aflatoxins are natural toxins produced by certain strains of mold. They can develop in agricultural crops before harvest or during drying and storage, particularly in hot and humid conditions. These toxins may appear in nuts, peanuts, corn, grains, dried fruits, and spices. Their presence cannot always be identified by sight, taste, or smell.
According to the World Health Organization, exposure to high levels can cause acute poisoning and liver damage, while chronic exposure increases long-term health risks, with natural aflatoxins classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as human carcinogens.
Health Risks and Consumer Guidance
Using the product does not automatically mean medical harm will occur, as risk depends on toxin levels, consumed quantity, and exposure duration. However, because tests revealed levels exceeding regulatory limits, the directive is to halt consumption immediately. No cases of illness have been reported in connection with the product.
