Russian Official Igor Chaika Becomes Viral Sensation Amid Scrutiny
Igor Chaika, son of Russia's former Prosecutor General, became a viral sensation on social media, drawing widespread ridicule over his weight and sparking severe online backlash. Despite past corruption investigations and Western sanctions, Putin appointed him to head a major state agency.
A minor appearance at a secondary event turned Igor Chaika, 37, head of the Russian agency for ties with compatriots abroad, into a social media sensation this week. A video of him addressing tense relations between Russia and Armenia amassed nearly five million views on X alone, while jokes about the Russian official's weight spread rapidly. Netizens mercilessly compared Chaika's appearance to fictional characters like the Kingpin and Peter Griffin from Family Guy. The blow dealt by internet users to the senior official was reportedly so severe that the official Instagram account of the Russian agency was entirely blocked from receiving comments.
Corruption Symbol and Navalny's Investigation
While Chaika became an online laughingstock in the West, for many citizens within the Russian Federation, his presence in government positions is no laughing matter and symbolizes official corruption and the alienation of high-ار ranking officials from ordinary people. Chaika is the son of Russia's former Prosecutor General, Yury Chaika, who stepped down in 2020. In 2015, the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny published an investigative report on the Chaika family, revealing that the former Prosecutor General and his two sons, Artyom and Igor, had amassed substantial wealth across several countries and seized control of numerous businesses generating hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
Igor Chaika, in particular, was accused in Navalny's investigation and other journalistic reports of illegally winning government and regional tenders for waste disposal, road renovation, and food transport within the vast country, amounting to tens of millions of dollars a year. According to those investigations, winning these tenders was made possible, among other things, through the intervention of law enforcement agencies directly subordinate to Chaika's father. Following the publication of Navalny's report, Russia's law enforcement system mobilized to conceal the vast assets accumulated by the Chaika family.
Sanctions and Appointment by Putin
In the summer of 2016, it was revealed that the Federal Service for State Registration (Rosreestr) had replaced the names of Igor Chaika and his brother in real estate registries with special codes. Thus, all property registered under Igor Chaika's name was hidden in the government registry under the pseudonym YFYAU9, while his brother Artyom's assets were hidden under LSDU3. In 2022, the United States imposed sanctions on Igor Chaika for what was defined as "interference in Moldova's internal affairs," and official American documents list YFYAU9 as his "alternative name."
Navalny petitioned Russia's Supreme Court demanding the annulment of the concealment of the Chaika family's property, but the judiciary sided with the Prosecutor General and his sons, ruling the authorities' move legal under the right to privacy. Following the scandals and the elder Chaika's retirement, many expected the family to vanish from Russia's public life, but the exact opposite occurred. In April of this year, President Vladimir Putin appointed Igor Chaika to head the agency for compatriots abroad, a government organization established in 2008 with a budget estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
