Iga Swiatek Ends 2026 Season Due to Injury

Iga Swiatek officially ended her 2026 tennis season after withdrawing from the Ningbo tournament due to a thigh injury. This decision definitively dashed the 25-year-old Polish star's hopes of qualifying for the prestigious WTA Finals, a tournament she previously conquered in 2023. Consequently, the year-end championship will take place without her for the first time since 2019.

Swiatek, currently ranked ninth in the world, wrapped up the 2026 campaign without capturing a single Grand Slam title, marking a dry spell in major tournaments since her Wimbledon triumph last year. Addressing her supporters, she reflected on the strenuous nature of the past year.

This has been one of the most challenging seasons of my career—full of trials, changes, and lessons from which I have drawn so much. I am especially proud of the work we accomplished in the second half of the year, which gives me great confidence for the future.

WTA Finals Chase and Alternate Race

With Swiatek sidelined, the race for the remaining spots at the WTA Finals—scheduled to begin on November 7 in Indian Wells, California—has intensified. Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine remains the primary contender capable of overtaking Czech player Karolina Muchova, who is skipping Ningbo and currently holds the eighth and final qualifying spot.

To surpass Muchova, Kostyuk must secure tournament victories in both Ningbo and Tokyo. Meanwhile, Iva Jovic stands as an additional alternate, while Diana Shnaider, Sorana Cirstea, Belinda Bencic, and Alexandra Eala remain in contention for the 9th and 10th alternate positions.

Seven players have already secured their direct qualification for the WTA Finals, barring any late withdrawals: Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva, Linda Noskova, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Elina Svitolina.
