IDF Concludes Major Southern Defense Drill Simulating Multi-Front Incursions
The IDF concluded a large-scale multi-domain military exercise in the southern region and Eilat, simulating potential border infiltrations and maritime threats following lessons learned from October 7.
The Red Sea naval forces detected a suspicious vessel approaching from the east, threatening the northern coastline of Eilat and its tourism-dependent economy. The incident in early June prompted an immediate response, with naval personnel firing warning shots before the vessel retreated toward Jordanian waters.
Strategic Defense and Lessons from October 7
The drill comes amid heightened readiness following the events of October 7. Speaking recently, intelligence officials warned that scenarios similar to the southern border infiltration could theoretically manifest in Eilat. The IDF's Edom Division (80th Division) recently concluded a large-scale trilateral exercise simulating multi-front incursions along the southern border and the Arava region.
"These are borders of peace, but our defense concept has fundamentally changed since the massacre," explained Lieutenant Y., operations officer for the Yoav Brigade, which secures the Jordanian border. "This scenario can happen again. We do not rule it out; on the contrary, we train to prevent it."
Multi-Domain Coordination
The comprehensive exercise integrated ground, naval, and air forces alongside the Israel Police, emergency services, and the Eilat counter-terrorism unit (LOTAR Eilat). Troops practiced neutralizing maritime infiltrations, countering ground invasions via drones, and managing mass-casualty scenarios.
"The enemy's goal is to seize assets, conduct killing sprees, and establish sovereignty to project weakness on Israel's part. We must constantly demonstrate defense across all communities," Lieutenant Y. noted.
Drills also simulated terrorist takeovers of Eilat hotels and educational institutions, focusing on hostage rescue situations involving foreign nationals.
Naval and Air Support Integration
Captain D., commander of the Navy's Snapir patrol squadron in the Gulf of Eilat, detailed the maritime defense maneuvers: "We train extensively to intercept multiple hostile marine vessels and neutralize threats before they reach the shore, learning critical lessons from the Zikim beach infiltrations on October 7."
Meanwhile, Air Force representatives embedded within the division headquarters coordinated simulated aerial firepower, medevac operations, and remote-piloted vehicle support. Captain A., an IAF representative, emphasized the necessity of physical presence in the war rooms: "Our role is to provide any necessary aerial assistance to ensure ground forces are never caught unprepared."
Military officials stressed that despite diplomatic relations with neighboring countries, defensive preparations along the eastern border remain rigorous and unyielding to ensure the safety of Eilat and Arava residents.
