IDF Deploys Elite 98th Division to West Bank in Major Operational Shift
The IDF is deploying the elite 98th Division to the West Bank in an unprecedented operational restructuring not seen since 2002, aiming to bolster command and control amid rising security tensions.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are significantly restructuring their command structure in the West Bank, deploying the elite 98th Division to operate alongside existing forces. Starting this Friday, the division will take over operational control in the Etzion and Yehuda brigades, splitting command responsibilities previously held solely by the Judea and Samaria Division.
This marks an extraordinary operational shift not seen since Operation Defensive Shield in 2002. Three military divisions will now operate across the West Bank and the Jordan Valley: two full divisions and the 98th Division acting in a headquarters capacity. The deployment follows a recent uptick in terrorist attacks, though senior military sources emphasize there are no specific warnings of massive coordinated terror infrastructure.
"We strive to eliminate every emerging cell the moment it forms," a senior military official stated. While incidents have increased compared to previous months of relative quiet, current threats primarily stem from lone actors or local cells rather than large-scale organized networks.
Beyond immediate security concerns, military analysts note that the West Bank has undergone profound demographic and geographic transformations. Government policies driven by figures such as Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich have expanded the settlement footprint, establishing over 100 new outposts and settlements over recent years alongside a massive proliferation of agricultural farms.
Military planners have frequently lagged behind these rapid administrative and territorial changes, forcing troops to secure vastly expanded friction lines. The introduction of the 98th Division is intended to provide tighter operational oversight and rapid response capabilities, ensuring that security forces can contain localized escalations before they spiral into broader conflicts.
