Two Foreign Nationals Die in Electrocution at Luxury Hotel Pool in India
Two foreign nationals, a German Lufthansa crew member and a Slovakian IBM manager, tragically died from suspected electrocution at a Bengaluru hotel pool in India, prompting a police investigation.
Two foreign nationals died in a tragic electrocution incident at the swimming pool of the five-star Conrad Hotel in Bengaluru, India, while two others sustained injuries while attempting a rescue. The incident occurred on Friday, October 30, at the Hilton-affiliated property located in the city.
The victims were identified as 57-year-old German citizen and Lufthansa crew member Alexander Maximilian Theiss, and 45-year-old Slovakian citizen Juraj Horvath, a project manager at IBM. Both men were at the third-floor pool when they encountered distress.
Preliminary reports indicate that Horvath was struck by electrical current while attempting to enter the pool, prompting Theiss to rush to his aid before also being electrocuted. A 41-year-old American tourist and a 28-year-old hotel employee attempted rescue efforts and suffered injuries as well. Both survivors were treated at a hospital and subsequently discharged.
The victims were rushed to Manipal Hospital, where one was pronounced dead upon arrival and the other suffered cardiac arrest, failing to respond to resuscitation efforts. Investigators revealed that Horvath had arrived in India with his family to celebrate his wedding anniversary, checking into the hotel just hours before the tragedy.
Police have launched a criminal negligence investigation against hotel management. Investigators are examining whether an electrical fault caused a live current to reach the pool railing, noting that residual electrical current was detected in the area even after the power supply was cut off. Conrad Hotel management expressed profound sorrow over the incident and pledged full cooperation with authorities.
