Hard to read: A 33-year-old homeless woman was found handcuffed to a balcony of a house in the city of Soest, Germany, half-naked and with severe signs of abuse all over her body, according to local media reports. The neighbor who discovered her initially thought it was a "Halloween decoration left hanging from the holiday," and only later realized it was a real person in distress and called the police.

According to police investigators, the woman was held as a sex slave in the town located east of Dortmund for many long months — from July to November 2025. The woman, who was homeless, was lured into the suspects' house with promises of food and shelter, and subsequently suffered a brutal campaign of abuse that included rape, repeated assaults, and the use of drugs. Investigators told a local newspaper that "the woman was kept like a slave in the basement" and that "everything imaginable was done to her — and even more than that, to the point of permanent disfigurement of her body."

Neighbors did not hear a scream for months

When discovered, the woman was suffering from severe hypothermia, numerous bruises, and wounds, and the police estimate that the neighbor who happened to discover her saved her life. According to the initial investigation, she was initially handcuffed to a heating pipe in the basement of the house, and later moved to the balcony. Investigators added that despite the disgusting acts, the neighbors did not hear a single scream — even when she was hanging on the balcony for long hours. One of the neighbors, Miriam Becker, said: "I was shocked that we, as neighbors, did not notice what was happening here."

Four men were arrested and are charged with aggravated assault, cannabis trafficking, and rape. Two of them are only 16 and 17 years old, and the other two are 24 and 29. The older man is considered the leader of the group and was known to the police in the past. All four suspects hold German passports. The partner of the alleged leader lived in the same house together with her two children, but no indictment was filed against her.

According to the investigation, the suspects even documented themselves on camera while beating the woman. Investigators estimate that it is possible the woman developed "Stockholm syndrome" and formed an emotional bond with her captors, out of a deep fear that she would not survive the winter if she left the house.

It was reported that after being rescued, the woman spent many long months in the hospital. The trial regarding the four suspects is expected to begin in October and will include 12 hearings at the regional court in Arnsberg.
