The historic market in Beersheba is reopening following a massive 65 million NIS renovation project aimed at modernizing its infrastructure and breathing new life into local commerce. The first completed phase, known as Quarter Alef, features revamped underground utility systems, modern roofing designed to replace the old asbestos structures, and upgraded flooring while preserving the historic tile patterns.
Merchants returning to their newly renovated shops expressed optimism about the upgraded environment. Susan, a clothing vendor with 15 years of experience at the market, noted that the enhanced security presence and modern facilities have created a more welcoming atmosphere for shoppers. Additional work is scheduled to continue across the remaining sections of the market, with total investments projected to reach approximately 100 million NIS by the time the entire project concludes.
Founded originally in the early 20th century, the market has long served as a central commercial hub for the region. Visitors can once again explore a wide array of fresh agricultural produce, baked goods, and local specialties such as the traditional Beersheba milfay pastry. City officials and municipal development partners anticipate that the comprehensive revitalization will significantly boost local tourism and retail activity.
