Thaçi, 58, who served as the political leader of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), stood trial alongside three other former senior KLA officials: Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi, and Jakup Krasniqi. Prosecutors had demanded the maximum 45-year prison sentence, accusing the defendants of participating in a joint criminal enterprise that targeted political opponents and civilians suspected of collaborating with Serbian forces.
The verdict is expected to further heighten tensions in the Western Balkans, coming hot on the heels of public outrage in the region over state honors and a large-scale funeral in Serbia for convicted war criminal Ratko Mladić. The former Bosnian Serb military commander died in The Hague while serving a life sentence for genocide and crimes against humanity, including the 1995 Srebrenica massacre.
Thaçi's defense lawyers argued that the charges were groundless and represented an attempt to rewrite history, maintaining that the KLA lacked a structured chain of command that would allow leaders to exercise effective control over all combatants. Despite the conviction, Thaçi and his co-defendants remain widely regarded as national heroes in Kosovo, where thousands of supporters have staged mass rallies demanding their release.
