Worrying moments were recorded during the men's team gymnastics final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, when English gymnast Gabriel Langton fell from the high bar, landing on his head and neck. The 18-year-old athlete received prolonged medical treatment in the arena before being carried out on a stretcher with his neck in a brace and transferred to the hospital.
The competition was halted for several minutes following the incident. The English team later stated that Langton was conscious, moving his body, and speaking with doctors.
"We thank the medical teams who responded immediately and provided him with assistance. He has been taken to the hospital and we will provide further information when it becomes available," the team's statement said.
Langton was added to the English squad earlier this month as a replacement for Max Whitlock, who missed the competition due to injury. The accident occurred in the middle of his routine when he missed the bar during a grip attempt.
After the competition resumed, Langton's teammates had to continue competing, despite the emotional toll. Luke Whitehouse, who was next to go on the high bar, received a score of 11.70 and ranked 23rd on the apparatus.
"It was very difficult. We had to reset, try to put it aside mentally and focus on our task. Everyone should be proud of the way we continued after Gabe's fall," Whitehouse said.
