Investigation Details Thwarted Hamas Terror Plot Targeting Vienna Institutions
A joint media investigation reveals that a thwarted Hamas terror cell planned attacks against Jewish and Israeli sites in Vienna, involving senior leadership and hidden weapons caches.

German and Austrian media outlets have published a joint investigation detailing a thwarted Hamas terror cell that targeted European institutions, including the Jewish Museum and the Austrian-Israeli Association in Vienna. According to Der Spiegel and Der Standard, the plot was orchestrated ahead of the second anniversary of the October 7 massacre.
Hamas Leadership and Vienna Connection
The investigation reveals potential involvement by senior Hamas official Basem Naim, who allegedly discussed the terror plots in Vienna and Germany with his son, Muhammad Naim, a key figure in the network. While publicly condemning attacks against Jews in Europe and the United States, Basem Naim communicated with his son via Telegram regarding both the planned attacks and broader political developments.
Investigators uncovered a four-minute video recorded by Muhammad Naim on August 7, 2025, in a rented room in Vienna's Favoriten district. Wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a disguised face, Naim positioned two pistols before him and threatened bloodshed in revenge for Gaza, vowing that the armed resistance would send Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a message in blood.
Weapons Cache and Mossad Intelligence
Five pistols were concealed for weeks inside a self-storage unit in Vienna's 7th district, rented under a false name just kilometers away from Jewish and Israeli institutions. The firearms were packed in a suitcase lined with thick aluminum foil, accompanied by cleaning oil and lubricants, indicating readiness for immediate use.
German authorities received crucial intelligence in June 2025 from the Mossad, warning that terror suspects were engaging in weapons trafficking within Germany. Following the tip, security services closely monitored the network as members procured arms and ammunition across European borders.
Indictments and Broader European Infrastructure
Federal prosecutors in Germany have indicted seven suspects for membership in Hamas and preparing violent attacks against Israeli, Jewish, and pro-Israeli targets. The network had amassed a total of 13 handguns, an automatic assault rifle, and 718 rounds of ammunition. Following coordinated arrests starting October 1, 2025, suspects are currently awaiting trial in Berlin.
European security officials note a strategic shift in Hamas operations across the continent, transforming Europe from a logistical and fundraising base into an active theater for operational cells, hidden weapons caches, and direct attacks.
