Hamas Leadership Contenders Face Runoff Vote for Control in Gaza

Hamas is expected to hold a runoff vote this week for the leadership of its political bureau in the Gaza Strip, following an inconclusive first round several weeks ago, Arabic media reported on Sunday.

Leadership Candidates

According to the reports, the runoff is contested by two senior political bureau members, Nizar Awadallah and Ali al-Amoudi. Neither candidate secured the required majority in the initial round, partly due to several voters casting blank ballots.

Reports indicate that behind-the-scenes factional maneuvering involves high-ranking Hamas figures. Khaled Mashal has reportedly lobbied members of the group's Shura Council to rally support for Awadallah. Zaher Jabarin, who oversees Hamas operations in the West Bank, also backs Awadallah.

"The ongoing restructuring reflects a critical phase for the organization following significant leadership losses and regional shifts."

Conversely, al-Amoudi is supported by Hamas political bureau deputy Khalil al-Hayya. Al-Amoudi was previously close to Yahya Sinwar, dating back to their shared time in an Israeli prison.

Strategic Realignments

Observers note that voter preferences have shifted in recent weeks. While al-Amoudi initially enjoyed broader backing, momentum has reportedly swung in favor of Awadallah ahead of the runoff.

Awadallah is a veteran figure within the terrorist organization and was historically close to founders Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi. In 2021, he narrowly lost a multi-round leadership contest in Gaza to Sinwar.

According to Saudi media, the internal election is part of a broader organizational restructuring following wartime losses. Regional developments, including setbacks for Iran and Hezbollah, have reportedly prompted Hamas to reassess its internal balance of power and future strategy.
