Four doctoral students from the University of Haifa have received the prestigious President's Scholarship for Scientific Excellence and Innovation, leading all Israeli research universities with the highest number of recipients this year. The awards were presented on Monday at a special ceremony held at the President's Residence, hosted by President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog.

Out of 11 selected researchers nationwide, four hail from the University of Haifa—comprising three women and one man. This year's overarching research focus centers on the impacts of adversity, particularly orphanhood and trauma, on the lives of children. The total grant pool distributed among the 11 laureates amounts to approximately 655,000 shekels.

Academic Excellence and Focus on Adversity

Prof. Irit Akirav, Dean of Advanced Studies and Head of the Bloom School at the University of Haifa, praised the achievement. "The success of our four research students highlights the outstanding quality of their academic work," she stated. Prof. Akirav emphasized that studying the repercussions of distress and loss on children carries heightened significance during times when numerous minors confront severe trauma, aiding in the development of targeted support systems.

The awarded Haifa doctoral candidates explore diverse facets of child development, mental health, and family resilience:

  • Hiba Halabi Aburokn investigates the neurobiological, psychological, and emotional consequences of maternal trauma on parenting and child development.

  • Hananel Goldfinger examines how parents facing hardship within ultra-Orthodox society seek professional help and how religious values shape these interventions.

  • Tal Eliyahu focuses on pluralistic thinking and loyalty conflicts among foster care facilitators.

  • Fida Bader explores the correlation between emotional regulation and depression among adolescents.

Selection Process

The President's Scholarship is annually awarded to exceptional doctoral candidates to promote cutting-edge scientific research in Israel. Each year, the president selects a central thematic focus, guiding an academic committee in evaluating candidates based on academic merit and research innovation.
