Prominent investigative journalist Gur Megiddo has announced his departure from TheMarker, wrapping up a 12-year career dedicated to investigative journalism. In a post published on his X account, Megiddo revealed that his upcoming investigation will be his last for the newspaper, alongside his decision to retire from the world of journalism entirely and embark on a new professional chapter.
End of an Era in Investigative Reporting
"This will be my last investigation at TheMarker, and in general. For 12 years I wrote investigative reports. It was thrilling, cool, and sometimes even frightening," Megiddo wrote. He detailed his experiences over the years dealing with powerful figures, lawsuits, surveillance, and confrontations, describing a professional era filled with considerable action.
"As long as the facts I published drove processes, there was tremendous satisfaction. One can only miss it," Megiddo wrote, reflecting on the declining status of facts in modern journalism.
Restructuring and Layoffs at Haaretz Group
Megiddo's departure comes during a period of upheaval at the Haaretz Group, which publishes both Haaretz and TheMarker. Recently, journalist Merav Moran announced she was laid off from the newspaper amid financial difficulties.
The organizational shifts follow management's announcement in July regarding the necessity of downsizing coverage areas and cutting staff. Following negotiations with the workers' committee, up to 19 journalists are slated for dismissal hearings by mid-August 2026 under improved terms.
