Israeli cinema has achieved another international milestone as the documentary film "Gulf of the Sun," directed by Ido Weiseman, won the Best Director award at the Doc.Rev Festival in Moscow. The international documentary film festival has been held annually in the Russian capital since 2011.
International and Local Success
This new award adds to a growing list of international accolades for the film. Recently, "Gulf of the Sun" won the Grand Prize for Feature Documentary at the Rhode Island International Film Festival in the United States, a prominent event in the independent and international film community.
The film has also garnered significant recognition at home. It was nominated for Best Feature Documentary at the Ophir Awards and won the Best Debut Film award at Docaviv, as well as the Best Debut Film and Best Music awards from the Documentary Forum for 2025.
A Window Into the Periphery
"Gulf of the Sun" follows the daily lives of three individuals living in a caravan park in Eilat. Through a sensitive and personal lens, the film portrays their routines and personal struggles without judging the characters or the reality they inhabit.
Through these three stories, the film addresses complex social issues in Israel, including military PTSD, estrangement from family, loneliness, and the feeling of social invisibility experienced by those living on the margins of the Israeli periphery.
The film originally broadcast on Kan 11 in early 2026 and is currently available for streaming via Kan BOX and the official Kan 11 YouTube channel.
