A British-Palestinian activist behind the UK Green Party's motion defining Zionism as racism is a close associate of an al-Qaeda terrorist who plotted a suicide bombing at Heathrow Airport, the Telegraph reported on Tuesday. Lobna Safian, who joined the Greens after leaving Jeremy Corbin's Your Party, proposed the controversial resolution passed at the party's Brighton conference. The motion calls for a single democratic Palestinian state and demands extensive sanctions against Israel.

According to court documents from 2015, Safian was described as a close friend of Mina Quang Pham, who was convicted in the US of being a member of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and plotting the Heathrow attack. Pham intended to target passengers arriving from Israel or the US using an explosive backpack laced with rat poison. Safian had previously agreed to testify on Pham's defense, characterizing him as a quiet and peaceful individual.

When questioned by the Telegraph regarding her continued association with Pham, Safian affirmed that her stance has not changed, claiming that Pham had been targeted by the system. The Green Party leadership faced intense backlash following the vote. Party co-leader Zack Polanski, who describes himself as anti-Zionist, abstained from the vote and later faced criticism for minimizing the concerns of Jewish members. Prominent former leaders, including Caroline Lucas, warned that the resolution alienated Jewish communities.
