Republican Senator Darlene Graham of South Carolina offered a mild critique of President Donald Trump over his decision to exempt Russia from a sanctions bill named after her late brother, Lindsey Graham.

Speaking to reporters, Graham stated she would prefer to pressure Russia to end the war and lower fuel prices, adding that she does not trust Vladimir Putin. This divergence comes as Graham campaigns for a full Senate term with Trump's backing.

The Sanctions Controversy

The legislation was designed to target Russia's energy sector. However, the Trump administration's decision to bypass sanctions provides a financial lifeline to Vladimir Putin. Other Republican senators have reacted more sharply, with Senator Thom Tillis calling the move irresponsible.

"Individually, I would choose to exert pressure on Russia to end the war and lower gas prices. I do not trust Putin," Graham said.

Political Implications

Graham noted she plans to discuss the decision with Trump during an upcoming rally in South Carolina. Meanwhile, Democratic challenger Dr. Annie Andrews criticized Graham for yielding to the administration.
