Gaza Smuggling Trial Delayed Over Delayed Defense Minister Signature

The trial of defendants in the Gaza goods smuggling case has been delayed for over three months due to a pending signature from Defense Minister Israel Katz. The clearance is required to transfer classified materials to the defense counsel.

The trial has been stalled because Katz has yet to sign the authorization, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir signed it promptly. Among the defendants is Bezalel Zini, the brother of Shin Bet Director David Zini.

The case, which involves the smuggling of goods into the Gaza Strip, was exposed in January with indictments filed in February. Prosecutors requested the transfer of classified investigative materials in June to allow defense attorneys to prepare for the proceedings.

Katz's staff has raised the issue with him multiple times, but his office has declined to comment. The ongoing delay prevents the legal proceedings from moving forward.
