Gal Gadot puts an end to the rumors — and says a final goodbye to Wonder Woman
The Israeli star said in an interview that there were no discussions with her about returning to the role of Wonder Woman in the new DC Universe: "Whoever it is that is going to play her, I wish her to enjoy this amazing journey with this amazing character."
Gal Gadot said today (Friday) that there were no specific discussions with her about returning to the role of Wonder Woman in the new DC Universe, nor about any other role in it, according to an interview with ScreenRant ahead of her new thriller on Amazon Prime, The Runner. According to her, the last significant conversations on the subject were when they came to the studio and really wanted to develop the third film.
"It's an amazing character that so many of us love so much, so whoever it is that is going to play her, I wish her to enjoy this amazing journey with this amazing character, — said Gadot. — I'm just grateful for the opportunity to have worn her boots and to celebrate this amazing character and everything she represents."
Gadot first took on the role of the DC heroine in 2016 in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the second film in the DC Extended Universe under Zack Snyder. She then led two solo films for the character and also appeared in other films in the brand, including Justice League.
Her possible return remained a question mark since James Gunn was appointed co-CEO of DC Studios and led the soft reboot of the cinematic universe to the DCU. Some actors and characters did move to the new universe, including Jason Momoa as Lobo, which left room for speculation surrounding Gadot.
Gadot's last appearances as Wonder Woman were in cameos in Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash, right at the final stage of the DCEU. The cameo in Shazam! 2 in particular caused some viewers to think that perhaps she still had a place in the DCU, because the post-credits scene included Economos played by Steve Agee and Harcourt played by Jennifer Holland — until Gunn later clarified that this scene is not considered canon.
In the background, the DCU is developing a new Wonder Woman film, with Ana Nogueira writing the script after her work on Supergirl and participating in the wider creative team of the new universe. Alongside reports of moving away from casting Gadot, fan ideas also surfaced on social media that she could return as another character, including Big Barda, Talia al Ghul, and Poison Ivy.
