Gabi Kanichowsky sums up a year at Ferencváros: 'In football, you also need luck'

Gabi Kanichowsky completed an excellent first season at Ferencváros under Robbie Keane, who knew him well from Maccabi Tel Aviv, but unfortunately, the team did not manage to win the championship. Ahead of the new season and in parallel with the struggles in the Europa League qualifiers, the Israeli midfielder gave an interview in which he spoke about the move abroad, working with the Irishman last season, and ambitions in Europe.

"I like to be in the game and influence it. I don't tend to disappear for ten minutes and wait for the right moment to score. I like to drop back to receive the ball, turn, and open up spaces. That is also my joy in football. The more I am involved in the game, the better I feel."

In the first match against Górnik Zabrze, which ended in a 1-0 victory for Ferencváros, Kanichowsky was one of the most prominent players on the pitch. "We had to work hard for this goal. We will see how the second game develops. It is clear that a difficult game awaits us, because they defended excellently in Budapest and were also dangerous in attack, but we have an advantage and that can influence the course of the game."

Despite the small advantage, Kanichowsky believes in the Ferencváros squad: "You need to play with intelligence and patience. Our squad is strong enough to overcome this hurdle. It is important that we transition from defense to the opponent's goal as quickly as possible; we have fast players up front."

Regarding his first season outside of Israel under Robbie Keane, who has since left Ferencváros, Kanichowsky said: "I played in Israel my whole life; previously I did not have the opportunity to move abroad. In football, alongside hard work, you also need luck. I had that moment when Robbie Keane called me. It was a great recognition for me, and I love challenges."
