In the coastal town of Blainville-sur-Mer in Normandy, France, an unusual event unfolded this week: the Cafe des Fleurs reopened its doors for just one week, five years after its last opening. Behind the counter stands 88-year-old Michelle David, continuing a tradition she began after closing the family business 22 years ago.

The cafe, first opened by her parents in 1930, operated for decades and even expanded into a small hotel. In 2004, following the death of her husband, Michelle decided to close the place. Instead of parting with the business permanently, she found an unusual way to preserve it: reopening it for a few days every five years.

The reason is not only nostalgia, but also a legal matter. In France, certain alcohol licenses can expire after five years of inactivity. Michelle, wishing to keep the license for her twin sons in case they want to run the business in the future, makes sure to open the cafe before the period ends.

Thus, since October 5, the small spot has come back to life. Around the six tables, long-time customers, residents, and friends gathered to drink coffee, exchange memories, and meet the owner. Despite her age, Michelle continues to serve drinks, chat with visitors, and tell jokes.
