Ford Issues Massive Recall for Over 223,000 F-150 Trucks Over Fuel Tank Risk
Ford is recalling 223,472 F-150 pickup trucks in the U.S. from model years 2023 to 2027 due to improperly secured fuel tanks that pose fire and detachment risks.
American automotive giant Ford is recalling more than 223,000 F-150 pickup trucks in the United States after it was discovered that the fuel tank in some vehicles may not be properly secured to the vehicle frame. The recall includes 223,472 vehicles from model years 2023 through 2027.
According to documents from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defect can cause fuel leakage and even detachment of the fuel tank while driving—a condition that can lead to engine stall, increase the risk of fire, and endanger other motorists on the road.
Root Cause of the Manufacturing Defect
The source of the problem is not the fuel tank itself, but the way it was attached to the vehicle during manufacturing. The fuel tank is held in place by straps connecting it to the pickup truck frame. According to the recall report, in some vehicles, the attachment points of the front strap were not properly inserted into the frame rail during assembly.
The report states: "In certain cases, the T-slots of the front fuel tank strap were not properly inserted into the vehicle frame rail during assembly." When the connection is improper, the fuel tank may shift out of position. In a severe scenario, it could leak or even detach from the vehicle while in motion.
Inspection and Repair Process
Ford estimates that only about 1% of the 223,472 pickup trucks included in the recall actually suffer from the defect. However, because it is impossible to determine in advance which vehicles are affected, the safety recall encompasses a much larger population.
Ford began investigating the issue in July after discovering cases of improperly secured fuel tanks. The investigation revealed that production line control measures failed to operate continuously during certain periods. As of August 27, Ford identified 16 warranty claims potentially related to the defect. No accidents or injuries have been reported.
"Ford is expected to begin sending notification letters to affected vehicle owners starting September 21. Owners will be asked to bring their vehicles to an authorized dealership, where the fuel tank strap installation will be inspected and repaired free of charge."
