A Florida judge is facing fierce public backlash after engaging in a lighthearted conversation about cooking steak with a domestic violence defendant during a bond hearing.
Circuit Judge Allison Gilman of Broward County drew sharp criticism from advocacy groups who warned that the casual tone sends a deeply harmful message to victims and survivors of abuse.
The incident took place during a hearing for Christopher Johnson, a chef arrested on allegations of grabbing his ex-girlfriend by the hair and striking her in the mouth. Court records also showed previous arrests involving allegations of aggravated assault against the same woman while she was pregnant. Judge Gilman set Johnson's bond at 1,500 dollars and issued a no-contact order.
However, public attention quickly focused on the unusual digression. Video footage from the courtroom showed the judge asking Johnson about his culinary background, prompting a detailed discussion on grilling techniques, meat temperatures, and how to prevent a steak from becoming chewy. At one point, the judge joked that she might visit his restaurant and suggested he could easily afford his bond thanks to his cooking skills.
Dr. Linda Parker, executive director of a local domestic violence advocacy organization, sharply condemned the exchange in comments to the press. Critics argued that the lighthearted banter undermines the seriousness required in sensitive legal proceedings and signals to victims that their safety may not be taken seriously. Reports noted that this was not the first time Judge Gilman incorporated culinary discussions into her courtroom proceedings.
