Israeli Pride: Weizmann Institute and Hebrew University Rank Among World's Top 100 Universities

Two Israeli academic institutions have been included in the top 100 universities worldwide according to the prestigious 2026 Shanghai Ranking: the Weizmann Institute of Science ranked 71st, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem ranked 89th.

The Shanghai index evaluates over 2,500 universities globally. The ranking is based on criteria including the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal laureates among alumni and faculty, the volume of highly cited researchers, and publications in leading scientific journals.

The Hebrew University dropped one spot compared to last year's 88th place, following its 81st-place ranking in 2024. The Weizmann Institute maintained its 71st position. The Technion, which had been included in the top 100 for the past two years, is absent from this year's list.

Leading American universities continue to dominate the top of the Shanghai ranking: Harvard University holds first place, Stanford University is second, and MIT is third. They are followed by the University of Cambridge in fourth place and the University of California, Berkeley, in fifth.

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion congratulated the Hebrew University on the achievement:
