Israeli football commentator and media personality Eyal Berkovic, who had the opportunity to play under him at Manchester City, said goodbye to him on the podcast "The Wizard and His Sons" from HaPodium. Berkovic described his character and paid tribute to him: "I am not sad that he died, I wasn't his friend or anything. It's not a matter of being sad, but he was a legend in England, a superstar."
"He was the first player in the world who was a superstar off the pitch as well. He was a handsome man, with curls, he was like a David Beckham. All the girls adored him. He was truly a superstar, a pop star of sorts. He was also a singer. He also played for Hamburg in Germany, where he won all the titles."
According to Berkovic, a few minutes were enough for him to understand that this was the coach he needed for his career: "I met with him for 10 minutes and said: 'Wow, this is the coach I need,' and I signed with Manchester City within a minute."
Berkovic did not hesitate to address the strained relationship between them that developed later: "It hurts me, yes. He was my coach. In the end, I fought with him because he brought in some Frenchman, some weak player. They brought him in and put me in the stands. It drove me crazy." He noted that this was what eventually caused him to leave: "I couldn't stand it, I left, and a month later they fired him. They came to us for a game, we beat them 4:2."
