Explosion in Ashdod: Oven incident causes panic in neighborhood
Police officers dispatched to a home in Ashdod following reports of gunfire were surprised to discover the true cause: a woman had turned on her oven, unaware that her partner had hidden a handgun and ammunition inside, which subsequently exploded. The Israel Police has opened an investigation.
On Monday night, police officers from the Ashdod station were dispatched to a street in the city after reports of gunfire sounds coming from a residence. To the officers' surprise, the reality of the situation was far more unusual.
A woman who intended to bake a pizza turned on the oven, unaware that her partner had hidden a handgun and ammunition inside. The items exploded the moment the oven was activated, creating sounds that mimicked gunfire. Police officers from the Ashdod station have opened an investigation into the incident.
Separately, last week, police conducted a search at a business in Ashdod, seizing computers suspected of being used for illegal gambling, along with documents and cash. It is suspected that the business was operating as a front for an illegal gambling house.
During the operation, officers took testimony from individuals present at the site. The person in charge was detained and transferred to the police station for further investigation. The operations officer of the Sa'ar Brigade, Major Matti Zarfati, stated that this activity is part of an ongoing effort to combat hubs of criminal activity.
"The activity we are carrying out is part of the ongoing fight against the generators of crime and places used for criminal activity," he said. "We will continue to act with determination to expose such hubs and bring to justice those involved in their operation."
