An amazing achievement for surfer Anat Lelior: the Israeli recorded an exceptional competition tonight (between Thursday and Friday) in the prestigious WSL circuit held in Tahiti, stopping only at the final stage to finish in a respectable second place. Lelior was a step away from a historic title win. She led for most of the close battle in the final, but saw Canadian Erin Brooks perform a dramatic comeback thanks to two particularly strong waves towards the end. 19-year-old Brooks won with 17.20 points, compared to 16.33 points for the Israeli.
Lelior's path to the final was impressive by any measure. Already on Wednesday, she made headlines when she shone and eliminated the world number one, Gabriela Bryan. In the quarter-finals, she defeated local surfer Kauli Vaast (9.50:6.53), and in the semi-finals, she crushed Portuguese surfer Yolanda Hopkins in an inspiring performance with a score of 12.50:3.43 on her way to the battle for the title.
