The health and longevity trend sweeping the United States in recent years has driven thousands of people to use unregulated experimental peptides, but for some, the promise of "body optimization" ends in severe health damage. According to a report by KFF Health News, while U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. works to remove regulatory barriers surrounding these substances, many users report severe side effects including debilitating migraines, eye pain, anxiety, and chronic fatigue.

Dylan Mintz, a weightlifter who hoped to improve his performance, reported that after just three days of using a nasal spray containing the experimental peptide BPC-157, he fell ill. "It felt like I was underwater, it took an immense effort to do anything," he described. Even after stopping use, he suffered from fatigue, anxiety, and muscle and eye tremors for months, alongside a sense of emotional numbness.

Peptides are small compounds made of proteins, built from the same basic blocks. While dozens of peptide-based drugs, such as insulin and GLP-1 weight-loss injections, have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following clinical trials, substances like BPC-157 have never been approved for human use. However, this does not stop social media influencers and popular podcast hosts, including Stanford University neuroscientist Andrew Huberman, from promoting them as a magic fix for muscle injuries and digestive issues, relying solely on animal trials.

Mintz purchased the substance from an online company that markets chemicals with the warning that they are "for laboratory research only and not for human consumption." Huberman himself did not respond to KFF Health News' request for comment, but a disclaimer appears on his podcast website stating that the content does not constitute medical advice.

Backing from Washington

Warnings on packaging may soon disappear due to the policy of Health Secretary Kennedy Jr. and the "Make America Healthy Again" movement. Kennedy has previously stated on social media and Joe Rogan's podcast that he is a "big fan" of peptides, promising to end the "aggressive suppression" of the FDA against them. "If you want to take an experimental drug, you should be able to do so," Kennedy said in an interview earlier this year.

Last summer, the Department of Health under his leadership appointed doctors with financial interests in the peptide industry to the FDA's advisory committee. In July, the new appointees voted in favor of easing restrictions on six experimental peptides, including BPC-157, TB-500, and MOTS-c, recommending that specialty pharmacies be allowed to compound them for humans even without official approval.

The vote passed despite opposition from FDA scientists, who presented evidence of the substances' ineffectiveness and warned of risks of liver damage, severe allergic reactions, and even the acceleration of cancerous tumors. Dr. Eric Topol, vice president of the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, warned that the move would undermine pharmaceutical companies' incentive to conduct orderly clinical trials: "We are going to have more people who become prey for predators who just want to sell, sell, sell."

"I Injected Myself in the Kitchen"

In the absence of established medical information, peptide victims find themselves searching for answers on online forums like Reddit and Discord, where they often encounter skepticism from trend enthusiasts. Dominic, a 46-year-old software engineer, told KFF Health News that he developed severe migraines and facial numbness days after taking a combination of the peptides BPC-157 and TB-4, known online as the "Wolverine stack" due to the promise of rapid healing like the Marvel superhero. "My left eye was throbbing with pain and my face felt inflamed for two months. It's an absolute nightmare," he shared.

Lois, an elementary school worker from Michigan, tried combining the substance with another experimental peptide for weight loss, but stopped due to intense pain. "I looked for a substance from a lab that clearly stated it wasn't for human use, bought a syringe, and injected it into myself in the kitchen," she said with shame, "It goes against every normal person's logic."

The dangers do not end with mild side effects. In July 2025, during an anti-aging conference in Las Vegas, two women were rushed to the hospital and required ventilation after being injected with experimental peptides and vitamins at a convention booth by a doctor operating without a local license. FDA databases have also accumulated alarming reports, including the life-threatening hospitalization of a 48-year-old man after using BPC-157. Dr. Brian Lee, a liver disease expert from the University of Southern California who opposed the relaxations on the committee, summarized the danger by noting that without clinical studies, long-term damages such as cirrhosis or cancer may only surface many years from now.
