Former Knesset member Esterina Tartman has passed away at the age of 68. Tartman served as a member of the Knesset representing the Yisrael Beytenu party between 2006 and 2009. Born in November 1957 in Jerusalem, she served in the IDF as an operations sergeant and later as the Jerusalem City Commander, being discharged with the rank of major.
Tartman entered politics in 1999 and ran for the 15th Knesset. During her parliamentary tenure, she served as chairwoman of her party faction, was a member of the House Committee and the State Control Committee, and also served on the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Alongside her legislative work, she promoted an amendment to the State Education Law aimed at establishing integrated public educational institutions.
In February 2007, Tartman was nominated by Yisrael Beytenu for the position of Minister of Tourism, replacing Isaac Herzog. Shortly thereafter, media reports revealed discrepancies in the resume she presented, particularly regarding her academic background. Following the ensuing public outcry, she withdrew her nomination and was subsequently replaced as faction chair.
