Significant escalation: NATO aircraft destroys naval drone near Black Sea gas project

Romania announced on Thursday that an F-16 fighter jet destroyed a booby-trapped naval drone just hundreds of meters from a gas project in the Black Sea. According to the Romanian Defense Minister, the explosive-laden vessel did not originate from neighboring Ukraine. The Romanian Navy also examined debris from other drones found off the coast of Constanta.

This naval incident adds to a series of serious security and aerial incidents along NATO's eastern flank. Among other events, a Spanish F-18 aircraft operating as part of a NATO mission intercepted a drone that penetrated from the direction of Moldova and violated Romanian airspace. Furthermore, NATO reported that Italian fighter jets intercepted a drone that entered Latvian airspace, amid repeated incursions that Poland and the Baltic states are also facing.

Romania, with a population of approximately 19 million, has become one of the countries most exposed to the consequences of the fighting in Ukraine. Its eastern coastline overlooking the Black Sea and the Danube River are in close proximity to combat zones and Ukrainian targets frequently attacked by Russia.
